HIGHLIGHTSAMES, Iowa?A resolute Iowa State soccer team held No. 7 Texas A&M to a scoreless regulation Friday evening at the ISU Soccer Complex, but the Aggies' Merritt Mathias delivered the sudden-victory goal 5:17 into the first overtime period to give her squad a 1-0 win in the Big 12 Conference match.
Despite coming into the match with a defensive mindset against Texas A&M (12-3/5-1 Big 12), the Cyclones earned several scoring opportunities as they fired 11 shots. Freshman
Jennifer Dominguez led Iowa State (6-8-2/1-5 Big 12) with three shots and had a quality scoring chance that she drove just wide of the Aggie goal in the 59th minute.
“I thought we played awesome tonight,” Iowa State head coach
Wendy Dillinger said. “We worked on our defense and counterattacking this week, and I thought we executed perfectly. We had an unlucky bounce that led to their goal unfortunately. I really thought everybody did their job tonight and didn't try to do too much.
“The team is really disappointed now because they put in a lot of work and battled and didn't get the result we wanted.”
Cyclone goalkeeper
Maddie Jobe played the full match in goal and made eight saves.
For the match, Texas A&M had a 21-11 shots advantage and held a slim 4-2 corner-kick edge.
The Cyclones play Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas at the ISU Soccer Complex.
