AMES, Iowa- In a back-and-forth Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series matchup, a career-best seven 3-pointers from Iowa State's Scott Christopherson could not lead the Cyclones' to victory over California. The Golden Bears made key plays down the stretch to edge out a 76-73 win Saturday in Hilton Coliseum.
A 3-pointer by Christopherson leveled the game at 69-69 with :47 seconds left and sent a crowd of 13,284 into euphoria. However, California's Bak Bak responded with a traditional three-point play and the Golden Bears never relinquished their lead.
Iowa State falls to 6-2 and California improves to 5-2.
The Cyclones had three players in double figures with Christopherson (25), Jake Anderson (16) and Diante Garrett (11). Christopherson's 25 points led all scorers in the game. Anderson and Melvin Ejim led Iowa State with nine rebounds apiece. Garrett dished out a game-high six assists.
Haper Kamp led the Bears with a double-double on a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Iowa State fell down by as many as 10 points in the first half, as California began the game making its 3-pointers and establishing superiority in the paint.
The Cyclones went on a crucial 10-0 run to tie the game at 33-33 after Scott Christopherson buried a break-away 3-pointer with 2:18 left in the first half.
Iowa State went into the break with a 39-38 lead behind Christopherson's 13 points and Jake Anderson's six first-half steals, establishing a new career high for the Cyclone senior.
The Cyclones return to action Monday when they play host to Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum.
