Iowa State Falls To Texas Tech In Big 12 Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas - Logan Hall hit two of Texas Tech's three homers as the Red Raiders hung on to defeat Iowa State, 6-3, in the Big 12 opener for both schools Saturday at a windy Rocky Johnson Field. The loss snaps ISU's seven-game winning streak and sends the Cyclones to 20-13 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play.
The first run of the game came in the third inning on a solo homer by Texas Tech (29-4, 1-0) catcher Jennifer Lee off ISU starter Rachel Zabriskie. The homer was Lee's first this season.
The Cyclones bounced back in the top of the fourth as Alex Johnson reached on an error and came around to score on a passed ball, tying the score at 1-1.
The tie didn't last long as Hall took over the game, blasting a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth to put the Red Raiders up 6-1 heading to ISU's final at bat.
The Cyclones did make some noise in the seventh inning, scoring a pair of runs to cut into the deficit.
Tori Torrescano pinch hit and doubled with one out and came around to score on a Heidi Kidwell groundout. Bianca Lopez then drove in Kelsey Kidwell before Ashly Jacobs struck out Courtney Wray to end the game.
Jacobs (11-1) got the win for the Red Raiders, scattering four Iowa State hits in the game. The senior struck out seven.
Zabriskie (16-7) suffered the loss for the Cyclones, allowing six runs on seven hits. Zabriskie fanned six in 5.1 innings of work. Lauren Kennewell retired the final two batters of the game in relief.
Hall drove in five to lead the Red Raiders.
Heidi Kidwell ran her hitting streak to six games with her single in the third inning.
The Cyclones and Red Raiders will play again Sunday at noon in the final game of the Big 12 series.
