Zabriskie?s Gem Leads Cyclones Past UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Rachel Zabriskie allowed one hit in six innings to help Iowa State defeat Northern Iowa, 6-0, Tuesday afternoon, snapping its season-long six-game losing streak. With the win, Iowa State improves to 23-19 this season.

Zabriskie (19-11) gave up just a sixth inning infield single to Northern Iowa (20-17) pinch hitter Hannah Borschel before being relieved by Tori Torrescano. Zabriskie struck out six in the game to run her season total to 219, just 14 shy of the school record held by Suzanne Wedemeier.

Iowa State took advantage of six hits and three Northern Iowa errors over the first three innings to go ahead 5-0.

The Cyclones got one run in both the first and second innings, scoring on Courtney Wray's first inning single and a fielder's choice on a ground ball from Erica Miller.

In the third, the Cyclones loaded the bases on hits from Wray, Sydni Jones and Amanda Bradberry. Wray came in to score on Dayln Varela's groundout and Carleigh Berry singled to center to plate Jones. Heidi Kidwell then grounded out and Bradberry scored to make it 5-0 in favor of the Cyclones.

In the top of the sixth, Alex Johnson drove in her 25th run of the season with a single down the left field line that scored Heidi Kidwell, who had a base hit to open the inning.

Zabriskie and Torrescano held the Panthers to two hits in the final two innings to secure the Cyclone win.

Iowa State's four through seven hitters collected nine hits, led by Wray's 3-for-4 performance. Johnson, Jones and Bradberry each had two hits in the win.

Berry ran her hitting streak to four games with her single in the third inning.

Melissa Tillett (4-11) took the loss for Northern Iowa, giving up five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Iowa State returns home Thursday to host Big 12 foe Nebraska at 4 p.m.
