No. 15 Texas Shuts Out Iowa State, 8-0

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team saw its bats shut down Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex as Texas hurler Blaire Luna completed her third no-hitter of the season as the No. 15 Longhorns shut out the Cyclones 8-0. ISU falls to 25-26 on the season and 3-12 in Big 12 play.

The Longhorns (39-10, 12-2 Big 12) didn't waste time getting on the board in the top of the first. Courtney Craig led off with a double. Two batters later, Alexis Bennett followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out for UT catcher Amy Hooks, who sent a three-run home run over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead.

Texas put another one on the board in the top of the third as Bennett took a 2-1 pitch by Rachel Zabriskie over the left-centerfield wall to increase the Longhorn lead to 4-0.

Iowa State got its lone base runner in the bottom frame of the third as Carrie Monroe drew a walk. Monroe made it to second on a wild pitch but that is as far as she would go as Luna fanned Amanda Bradberry and Carleigh Berry to end the inning.

UT tacked another run on in the fourth as Tallie Thrasher sent a home run just over the straightaway centerfield wall to make the game 5-0 and end Zabriskie's day in the circle, with Lauren Kennewell replacing the junior. Kennewell let Brittany Chalk on for a single before Craig stepped up with her 12th home run of the season just clipping over the left field wall to increase the lead to 7-0.

The Longhorns got their fifth home run of the day in the top of the fifth as Nadia Taylor sent a shot over center to make it an 8-0 game.

Zabriskie picked up the loss on the day, dropping to 20-16 for the season. The junior pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, five runs and one walk while striking out six.

Luna's no-hitter improves her to 26-6 on the season, in her five innings of work she struck out 12 Cyclones.

The Cyclones and Longhorns will play again tomorrow at 12 p.m. it will be Iowa State's final home game of the season.
