Cyclones Win 1-0 Thriller Over TCU

AMES, Iowa-A game-winning goal in the 89th minute by sophomore forward Adalie Schmidt gave Iowa State a 1-0 victory on senior night over TCU Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

Turning Point of the Game

Iowa State had one final chance to win the game in the final minute with a corner kick. The Cyclones didn't disappoint. Freshman Maribell Morales perfectly floated the corner kick to the back corner to teammate Haley Albert who was able to get the ball to Koree Willer. Willer was able to find a crease in the Horned Frog defense where Adalie Schmidt was waiting. The sophomore wasted no time, drilling the ball into the back of the net and giving the Cyclones the 1-0 victory.

Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…

Adalie Schmidt. When the Cyclones needed someone to step up, she did just that. Schmidt, who missed a large part of the season due to injury, was able to find the back of the net for the fourth time this season. Her goal was just what the Cyclones needed to send the senior class out in style.

Honorable mention. The senior class. The five Cyclone seniors were all huge in different aspects of the game. Senior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson made several saves that would been goals for TCU. Each made contributions throughout the game that were keys to the Iowa State victory.

Coach Said it

“It's interesting because we've seen Maribell take those corner kicks all year and put them in,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “She's had some opportunities to take corners this season and she hasn't hit them as well as she hit that one or like we've seen her in practice. Albert was on the back post and Maribell got her the ball and she was able to keep it alive and everyone was able to fight and scrum it out. Adalie had a similar goal earlier this season in being in the right place at the right time. It's great to have those players connect and keep scrapping it out to be able to get that win.”
