MORAGA, Calif. – The Iowa State women's basketball team (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) suffered its first loss of the season to the St. Mary's Gaels (4-1, 0-0 West Coast) 67-63 on Saturday in the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, California.
Seniors Brynn Williamson and Nikki Moody made the St. Mary's College Classic All-Tournament Team, as the host team won its Thanksgiving tournament for the second consecutive year.
How it happened…
St. Mary's would get off to a quick start, building a 17-9 lead on the Cyclones in the early going. Fallon Ellis would knott it up for Iowa State, 21-21, at the 6:46 mark on the old-fashioned 3-point play assisted by Nikki Moody. Emily Durr snagged the first lead of the day for ISU, 27-25, on a 3-pointer with 2:28 left in the first half, but St. Mary's would take a 30-27 lead into the locker room.
The Gaels would control the momentum early on in the second half, jumping out to a 39-34 lead forcing Iowa State to take a timeout at the 15:53 mark. St. Mary's would stretch their lead to 52-39 midway through the second half; the 13-point margin would be Iowa State's largest deficit of the game.
Iowa State would mount an 11-0 run lasting just under four minutes, cutting St. Mary's lead down to two, 52-50. The two teams would joust for momentum throughout the remainder of the game, but the Gaels held on to close out the game, 67-63.
Three Iowa State players posted double-digit scoring efforts with Emily Durr (10), Seanna Johnson (12) and Brynn Williamson (14).
The Cyclones would knock down nine of 10 from the free throw line, while shooting 35.5 percent from the field. ISU would net 10 3-pointers for the fourth-consecutive game.
Game Ball Goes To...
Brynn Williamson. The senior led the Cyclones with 14 points, recording a double-digit scoring effort for the 32nd time in her career. Williamson's performance also saw eight rebounds as the forward clocked 36 minutes on the floor during Iowa State's tough loss.
