08.22.2014 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss.- The Iowa State soccer team opened up the 2014 season with a 5-1 win over Mississippi State Friday at the MSU Soccer Field. The win was the first official match under new head Coach Tony Minatta. Iowa State's five goals scored are the most goals scored in a season opener since the programs inaugural season in 1996.
Turning Point of the Game
Senior Margaret Powers got the Cyclones rolling in the 26th minute with the first goal of the season. From then on it was all Cyclones until the final horn. Powers was followed by Koree Willer two minutes later putting Iowa State up 2-0 in the first 28 minutes. Adalie Schmidt drilled back-to-back goals before Maggie Bruckman scored the Cyclones' fifth and final goal.

Adalie Schmidt. Last season, Schmidt was riddled with injury and was unable to perform at her best. In her first game of the 2014 season, the now healthy sophomore came out firing, scoring the first two goals of her career, leading Iowa State to the victory.
Coach Said It
"I'm incredibly proud of the team as a whole," Minatta said. "We showed great effort all around. The goal set by team captain Margaret Powers set the tone. It was just a clinical finish, from a great pass. Andrea Swanson was incredible in goal. Two of her saves were highlight reel worthy and gave the team inspiration to keep fighting. In the end it was a great team effort in very hot and humid conditions. We are going to enjoy the win tonight and start getting ready for Ole Miss tomorrow.”
Game Notes
* The win marks the first under head coach Tony Minatta.
