AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team (6-3) earned a decisive 2-0 shutout over the Drake Bulldogs (4-5) Friday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State returns to competition on Sunday at home against South Dakota State at 1 p.m.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 13th minute, freshman defender Sasha Stinson sent a cross from the right corner towards the Drake goal intended for Koree Willer. Stinson's pass was deflected after Willer and a Drake defender tangled near the goal and ended in the possession of Hayley Womack. The senior wasted no time, putting the ball into the back of the net and the Cyclones up 1-0. Six minutes later Haley Albert found herself in a similar situation after a corner kick by Hayley Womack. Albert followed Womack's lead and put the Cyclones up 2-0. Iowa State's two goals in the first half would be enough to close out the game.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Hayley Womack. The senior got the Cyclones rolling early scoring the game-winning goal in the 13th minute. Womack also handled corner kick duties for the Cyclones and she didn't disappoint, placing nearly every shot in a great area giving her teammates a chance to score.
Coach Said It
“I thought we came out and possessed the ball well,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “When we attacked them with some pace and attacked them with some energy trying to score, we got the goal from Hayley Womack off of a great play from Sasha Stinson. Overall we did a good job of possessing the ball and controlling the game, but I felt like we could have played with a much more overall heightened sense of urgency and play at a faster pace which would have caused them a lot more problems.”
