AMES, Iowa- Before a school record crowd, the Iowa State soccer team defeated rival Iowa, 2-1 to take the lead in the Iowa Corn CyHawk standings, 2-0.With 2,090 fans in attendance it was standing room only as the Cyclones recorded the first victory over Iowa since 2005 and the first home victory since 2004. The Cyclone win also snapped Iowa's streak of 30 non-conference games without a loss.
Turning Point of the Game
Trailing 1-0 in the 57th minute senior Hayley Womack received a pass from Haley Albert and never looked back. Womack fired a shot from the right side of the box that ricocheted off the far post and into the back of the net and tied the game 1-1. Another senior, Alyssa Williamson, put the game away in the 75th minute after freshman Kaley Nieters fooled the entire Hawkeye defense with a nifty behind the back pass that found a streaking Williamson. The senior didn't waste any time drilling a bullet into the Hawkeye goal and scoring the game winning shot.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Hayley Womack and Alyssa Williamson. When things got tough, the two seniors stepped up huge scoring back-to-back goals in the second half. Womack's goal tied the game for the Cyclones and Williamson put the game away. The goals marked the first of the season for both seniors.
Honorable mention
Iowa State's defense. Play after play the Cyclone defenders made huge stops keeping Iowa State's goal safe. Whether it was Kourtney Camy, Maggie Bruckman or Madi Ott, it didn't matter. When the Cyclones needed a stop, the back line made it happen.
Coach Said It
“All week we have been talking about needing to bring some energy and bring heart and play with passion,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “You could see that from the very start of the game. We were going after it. Once the game settled in, it was more back and forth. The biggest takeaway was that when we put our minds to something and want to achieve something, we can achieve it. I'm impressed that we fought until the end for 90 minutes. We went down 1-0 and we didn't let it affect us negatively, we just kept coming back and coming back. Two seniors who have lost to Iowa for the past three years put the team on their back and scored two incredible goals.”
