LAS VEGAS – Iowa State shortstop Lexi Slater broke ISU's record for doubles in a career as the Cyclones defeated Eastern Kentucky 8-7 Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. Iowa State improved to 13-7 on the season.
Slater led off the top of the sixth inning with her 39th career double, passing Alex Johnson (2007-10), who had 38 career two-baggers.
Reese With Another Bomb
Brittany Gomez led off the top of the third innings with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Maddie Reese took the first offering from Hayley Flynn over the wall in left field to make it 2-0 ISU. It was Reese's sixth home run of the season, and upped her to 15 RBIs on the season.
The homer helped kick-start the Iowa State offense as Rachel Hartman followed with a single. Aly Cappaert then followed that with a double to right-center, allowing Hartman's pinch runner Kaila Konz to score all the way from first. After a Flynn wild pitch advanced Cappaert to third, Nychole Antillon hit a sac fly to right to bring home the run and make it 4-0 Cyclones.
Colonels Respond
The Colonels used their half of the third inning to even up proceedings. A 2-RBI double by Sarah Fobbs and an RBI-double by Johnkyria Alston reduced the Iowa State advantage to 4-3. The Cyclones pulled started Brianna Weilbacher and brought in Stacy Roggentien to try and close out the inning. However, EKU was able to get its tying run as pinch hitter Sarah Jackson tied it up with an RBI-single to center.
Errors Get ISU Back Ahead
Jorden Spendlove (hit by pitch) and Lexi Slater (single) got runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fourth. EKU looked out of the inning as Reese flew one to left, but it was dropped by Fobbs, allowing Spendlove to score and put ISU back ahead. Hartman then grounded to third, but the throw to first by McQueen was well off-target, bringing Slater home. Cappaert followed that up with her second RBI-double of the game to get the Cyclones back ahead 7-4.
Record Breaking Double
Slater led off the sixth inning and fired a double off the wall in center to record her 39th career double, breaking the ISU career record of Alex Johnson's (2007-10) of 38. Slater eventually came home to score as EKU recorded a wild pitch during Cappaert's at-bat.
