STILLWATER, Okla. - The Iowa State softball team (15-21 0-5 Big 12) dropped game two of its series with Oklahoma State (19-17, 2-4 Big 12) in a high-scoring 12-10 loss on Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium. The loss came despite a monster grand slam from freshman Kaylee Bosworth, the first of her career.
Oklahoma State 12, Iowa State 10
The Cowgirls got off to a tremendous start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first after holding Iowa State scoreless in the visitor's frame. Tiffany Mikkelson got things started with a two-RBI single up the middle, followed by a solo home run from Montgomery. An RBI double from Faulkner finished off the Oklahoma State scoring, as OSU led 4-0 after one.
Iowa State responded in a big way in the top of the third inning. Kaylee Bosworth led off the inning with a single to left, followed by Kaila Konz reaching on an OSU fielding error. Senior Brittany Gomez then stepped to the plate and smacked a double to left center, scoring Bosworth and Konz, as Gomez advanced to third on the throw. The senior went 4-for-4 at the plate on the day with two RBI. She later scored on a Cathlin Bingham groundout, cutting the Oklahoma State lead to 4-3.
Aly Cappaert stepped to the plate for the ensuing at-bat and crushed a solo home run to left center, tying the contest at 4-4. It was Cappaert's eighth home run of the season and her second of the series.
The Cyclones kept the pressure on in the top of the fourth, scoring two additional runs to take their first lead of the game. Konz kept the momentum going with an RBI double to left, scoring Sammie Hildreth. Bingahm later hit an RBI chopper to third that brought Konz to the plate for a 6-4 ISU lead. The Cowgirls answered back with two of their own in the home half of the inning to knot things up at 6-6.
Iowa State wrestled back control in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, the Cyclones loaded the bases on an OSU error, followed by a Sammie Hildreth walk and Sally Woolpert being hit by pitch. Then Bosworth stepped to the plate and absolutely crushed a ball over the fence in center field to clear the bases and give Iowa State a 10-6 advantage.
However, Oklahoma State's potent offense showed up in the bottom half of the inning and scored six runs. The Cyclones would be held scoreless in the final two innings, as OSU went on to win 12-10.
