AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team (20-30, 1-12 Big 12) fell to Texas (35-14, 8-7 Big 12) on Friday by a score of 15-2.

Texas center fielder Lindsey Stephens came out and set the tone as the UT lead-off batter, hitting a solo home run down the left field line to open the game, putting the Cyclones in an early 1-0 hole. Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders finished out the remainder of the frame scoreless, and also held UT off the board in the second inning.
The third inning marked the turning point in the game, with the Longhorns leading 1-0 entering the frame, Celina Felix made it 3-0 in a hurry. She hit a two-run homer following a Stephens double. Texas put up 10 runs in total in the frame, including two additional home runs, one of which was a grand slam off the bat of Kelli Hanzel. Cyclone relievers Emma Hylen and Mandi Moore both entered during the frame in an attempt to cool down the Texas bats.
Iowa State put one on the board in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from Kelsey McFarland with the bases loaded. However, Texas turned a sharp 5-3 double play to end the frame, keeping the deficit at 11-1.
The Longhorns scored one in the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 15-1. McFarland closed out the scoring with her second RBI of the day, bringing in Gomez from third on a fielder's choice, but the Cyclones fell, 15-2.
On Deck
The Cyclones and Longhorns will play game two of their weekend series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Saturday's game will mark Senior Day for Iowa State's Aly Cappaert, Brittany Gomez and Sammie Hildreth.
