AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team (2-3-1) ran past UMKC (2-4) on Sunday afternoon behind a late offensive flurry. The Cyclones got goals from Courtney Powell (73') and Emily Steil (76') during a stint in which ISU was able to apply continual pressure to the Kangaroo backline.

Turning Point of the Game
Following a 0-0 tie on Friday night, the Cyclones found themselves in another scoreless battle with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation on Sunday vs. UMKC. However, in the 73rd minute, Brooke Tasker played a ball into the box, finding freshman speedster Courtney Powell. The native of La Porte City, Iowa, collected and spun to protect the ball, before finding an opening on the right side of the goal, pushing it through to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
The goal not only gave ISU a lead, but allowed the Cyclones to play freely for the remainder of the game, creating chance after chance at goal. Just three minutes later, sophomore Hannah Cade made a beautiful cross in front of the net, finding Emily Steil, who buried the header to extend the Iowa State lead.

Courtney Powell. The freshman came off the bench, and provided a spark in 35 minutes of play. Powell had three shots, including two on goal, and came up with the goal that changed the outlook of the match, helping Iowa State improve to 2-3-1.

Coach Said It
"In the second half we started to find more of a rhythm and combination of players that work together and can provide that energy and spark," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We got extended minutes from five freshmen. They're coming of age and growing. We're going to need them with the style that we play, so it was good to see them making the impact that they did. McKenna Schultz came in and gave us a lift in the first half and then to start the second half, she really played well."
