Cyclone Notebook
-It will be another double-dual weekend for Iowa State as they had north to take on a pair of Big 12 opponents. The Cyclones will take on North Dakota State on Friday evening at 7 p.m., followed by South Dakota State at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
-NDSU and SDSU are Big 12 affiliate members that joined the conference last season. ISU and NDSU have only met on four other occasions, with the Cyclones holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. Iowa State will be looking to avenge a 25-16 loss suffered in Fargo last season.
-The Cyclones and Jackrabbits first met in 1952, and since then Iowa State holds the edge in the series, 9-1. SDSU notched their first win over ISU last season, 27-9.
-Last weekend, Iowa State dropped a pair of duals, falling to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. This broke a four match win streak for the Cyclones, the best since January of 2016.
-Ian Parker performed extremely well for the Cyclones in his debut at 141 pounds. He started the weekend with a 4-2 decision against No. 26 Mike Longo and then upended two-time defending national champion No. 4 Dean Heil by 3-1 decision. Parker was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his efforts.
-Parker's win over the national champ makes him the first Cyclone to defeat a reigning champ since David Zabriskie beat Missouri's Mark Ellis in 2010. Since the weight class change in 1999, only six Iowa State grapplers have accomplished this feat in dual action.
-ISU started the year 0-4 in duals, but has since gone on to post a 6-3 mark. Iowa State's latest triumph came at the hands of West Virginia.
-The win over WVU is the first Big 12 victory at home for Iowa State since Feb. 14, 2016, which was also against West Virginia.
-Iowa State's hot streak started at the Virginia Duals. In Hampton, the Cyclones took down Virginia, Old Dominion, Lock Haven and Fresno State. Their only defeat came at the hands of eventual tournament champion, Arizona State.
-Iowa State has two wrestlers receiving national rankings. Ian Parker (20, NR, 20) and Jarrett Degen (NR, 18, 19) are both in this week's FloWrestling, Intermat and the Trackwrestling polls.
-Prior to the defeat of Oregon State, the Cyclones hadn't won a dual since Nov. 26, 2016. ISU also broke a nine-match home losing streak, which dated back to Feb. 14, 2016.
-In total, 22 wrestlers have competed for Iowa State in dual competition this season, which is well over half of the roster. The Cyclones have featured a different lineup in all 10 duals this season.
-Dresser and his staff have had to manage a very young Iowa State squad this season. Of the 33 Iowa State wrestlers, only 16 of them were on the team last year. The team also consists of 24 underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores.)
-In 12 dual competitions, the Cyclones have four wrestlers with seven or more wins. Chase Straw (7), Jarrett Degen (8), Dane Pestano (8) and Marcus Harrington (8) have been anchors in the Iowa State lineup.
-Those four, along with Sam Colbray (13), have all tallied 13 or more takedowns in duals this season. Pestano (32), Degen (26), Straw (19), Harrington (19) and Colbray (13).
-Last year, Iowa State wrestled in 13 duals. They recorded 46 individual wins and 124 total takedowns. This season, the Cyclones have racked up 57 individual wins and 166 takedowns in only 12 competitions.
-Iowa State has a pair of freshmen who are redshirting this year that are performing very well unattached. Marcus Coleman has posted a 24-2 record with his only losses coming to UNI's Taylor Lujan. Ryan Leisure is 22-4. The duo has combined for eight tournament wins and 29 total bonus-point victories.
-The Cyclones' top recruit in the class of 2017 took the mat for the first time at the Willy Myers Open. Austin Gomez went 2-0 to win the 133-pound bracket, knocking off teammate Markus Simmons in sudden victory in the finals. He followed this up with a Duhawk Open title. Gomez is now 5-0 with four tech-falls.
