FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Iowa State (17-15) went 2-0 on Saturday at the Wooo Pig Classic, opening the day with a 12-1 victory over Tulsa (17-11) before a 6-5 come-from-behind victory in walk-off fashion over Omaha (12-17).
The Cyclones trailed Omaha 5-0 after the top of the second inning, but scored four runs in the sixth, and got a walk-off solo home run by Sydney Stites in the bottom of the seventh. It's the largest comeback victory of the season for Iowa State. Senior Kaila Konz also had a critical home run in the sixth to spark the rally, the second of her career.
In game one, Iowa State got home runs from Sami Williams, Stites and Nychole Antillon, and scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning to avenge Friday's loss to Tulsa.
Iowa State 12, Tulsa 1
Williams started the day off with a bang, sending the second pitch of the game deep to center field and over the wall at Bogle Park for a lead-off home run. It was Williams' team-high ninth homer of the year, surpassing her 2017 season total of eight. The sensational sophomore has hit seven home runs in her last 11 games.
The Golden Hurricane answered back with a solo home run of their own in the home half of the second inning off the bat of Morgan Neal. However, starting pitcher Emma Hylen and the Cyclone defense were tremendous in bouncing back, holding Tulsa hitless over the next three innings.
Iowa State took back the lead in the top of the third frame. Stites and Sally Woolpert sparked the inning with back-to-back one-out base hits. Kaylee Bosworth then stepped the plate and notched an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field, as Stites turned on the jets to score from second base, giving ISU a 2-1 lead.
The Cyclones broke the game open in the sixth inning with a flurry of offense, putting 10 runs on the board in the frame. Iowa State notched nine of its 14 hits in the sixth, marking the best single-inning offensive output of the season.
Konz started things off by whacking an RBI base hit through the right side, scoring Skyler Ramos. Williams followed suit with an RBI single of her own, extending the lead to 4-1. Stites then stepped to the plate and launched a three-run bomb to left field, her third home run of the season.
Following a single by Sally Woolpert and a double for Bosworth, Taylor Nearad laced a two-RBI double to left field. Nearad is currently the Big 12's doubles leader with 14 this season. Nearad would later score on a Tulsa error, and Antillon put the finishing touches on the Cyclone victory with a two-run home run to left field, scoring Kirsten Caudle. Antillon finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, followed by Williams, Stites and Woolpert, who collected two hits each.
Hylen finished off her sixth win of the season in dominant fashion. The junior allowed one run on just three hits, to go with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
Iowa State 6, Omaha 5
The Mavericks flipped the script on the Cyclones in game two of the day, notching a lead-off home run by Natalie Mostek. Iowa State got out of a jam with Mav runners on second and third, but Omaha's offense was back at it in the top of the second. Mostek hit her second home run in as many innings with a three run shot to right-center.
The Mavs added one more run with an RBI double off the bat of Savannah Fisher, extending their lead to 5-0.
Iowa State responded in the home half of the second inning, putting its first run on the board. Antillon was hit by pitch with one out to put a runner on, and Ramos reached and advanced to second on a pair of Omaha fielding errors. Konz notched an infield RBI single back to the pitcher, scoring Antillon to cut the Mav lead to 5-1.
The Cyclones continued to battle Omaha and finally broke through with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth. Bosworth and Nearad notched back-to-back doubles to open the frame, with Nearad's RBI cutting the deficit to 5-2. Caudle kept the bats hot with an RBI single to left, scoring Bosworth to make it 5-3.
With two outs and Caudle on second, Konz came to the plate and re-set the game with one swing. The senior launched a two-run shot to center field, tying the game at 5-5. It was the second home run of her career and the first outside the park home run for the native of West Des Moines, Iowa.
Relief pitcher Brianna Weilbacher and the ISU defense put the Mavs down in order in the top of the seventh, setting Stites up for the walk-off heroics. She led-off the bottom of the seventh and sent the first pitch she saw over the fence in left field, completing the comeback for Iowa State.
Weilbacher recorded the win in the circle for Iowa State, going 5.2 innings while giving up just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
