Cyclones Fall At No. 24 OSU In Big 12 Opener

STILLWATER, Okla. – Iowa State (17-17, 0-1 Big 12) fell 8-1 to No. 24 Oklahoma State (22-7, 1-0 Big 12) in the conference series-opener on Friday night. Taylor Nearad led the way offensively, going 2-of-3 at the plate, while Nychole Antillon drove in Iowa State's lone run.

The Cowgirls showed why they're nationally ranked and considered one of the best offensive teams in the country early. OSU got a lead-off base hit from Vanessa Shippy, and then loaded the bases on an ISU fielding error and a walk. Senior Whitney Whitehorn then stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a grand slam to left field.
Oklahoma State added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single off the wall in left field by Sydney Pennington.
Iowa State responded, getting on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Sally Woolpert opened the frame with a walk, followed by back-to-back base hits by Kaylee Bosworth and Nearad to load the bases. Antillon brought Iowa State's lone run to the plate, lacing an RBI single to left field to score Bosworth.
OSU was back at in the home half of the fifth inning, as the Cowgirls scored three runs on three hits in the frame, capped by an RBI double to left field by Taylor Lynch, extending the lead to 8-1.
Starting pitcher Brianna Weilbacher took the loss for Iowa State, allowed four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings of action.
On Deck
The series continues tomorrow, with game two between the Cyclones and Cowgirls set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
