CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State Soccer team is headed to Colorado this weekend to take on Denver and former Big 12 foe Colorado. The Cyclones face the Pioneers on Friday at 8 p.m. CT at DU's Pioneer Field. ISU will then travel to Boulder to battle Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's match at Colorado will be streamed live on PAC-12 Plus.
2. Both Denver and Colorado qualified for the 2017 NCAA Soccer Championship a season ago. Denver is the defending Summit League champions, tallying a 11-9-1 record a season ago. Denver and Colorado met in the first round of the 2017 NCAA tournament, with Colorado advancing, 2-1.
3. The Cyclones are looking to bounce back from an 0-2 weekend at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. Iowa State battled a pair of Big Ten opponents, falling 1-0 to No. 19 Northwestern on Friday, before a 2-1 heart-breaking loss to Purdue on Sunday. The Boilermakers scored the go-ahead goal with 9 seconds remaining in regulation.
4. ISU center back Marin Daniel earned all-tournament team honors at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup after an outstanding weekend. Daniel played all 180 minutes for the Cyclones at the tournament and was a menace to opposing offenses, consistently turning away scoring opportunities for the Wildcats and Boilermakers.
5. Iowa State's depth has been another bright spot early in the season, particularly in the Purdue match. Head coach Tony Minatta was able to utilize 20 field players in the contest, and the bench came through in a huge way, providing the highlight of the match.
6. Senior Brianna Curtis and freshman Kara Privitera, both substitutes, entered and teamed up to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. Curtis played a beautiful ball forward to find Privitera in stride on a breakaway. Privitera maneuvered past the Purdue goalie to drive home the first goal of her collegiate career.
7. Daniel and fellow center back Jordan Enga have been a tremendous duo on the back line so far this season for the Cyclones. Both have played all 375 available minutes this season, and have drawn rave reviews from Minatta and staff for anchoring the Iowa State defensive effort.
SERIES vs. DENVER
Iowa State and Denver have met just once on the pitch prior to Friday's match. The Pioneers came out on top in the lone meeting between the two programs, 1-0 on Sep. 14, 2014 in a match played at Denver.
A late two-goal rally helped the Pioneers past the Cyclones in the first match-up. Koree Willer scored her third goal in as many games, converting a header off a corner kick by Haylee Womack to give Iowa State the early lead. However, Denver rallied with an equalizer in the 85th minute and the game-winner in the 86th to come away victorious.
SERIES vs. COLORADO
The Iowa State and Colorado soccer programs are no stranger to each other, with the former Big 12 foes having met 16 times on the pitch prior to Sunday's contest in Boulder, with CU owning a 13-2-1 all-time record against the Cyclones. The two teams played every year from Iowa State's first women's collegiate Division 1 soccer team in 1994 until their final game as conference foes on Oct. 10, 2010.
The two teams met most recently on Sept. 6, 2015 in the first-ever non-conference match-up between the programs. The Buffaloes came out on top in come-from-behind fashion, 2-1, in overtime in Boulder. Then-junior Koree Willer scored the lone Cyclone goal in the fourth minute of action.
