CYCLONE NOTEBOOK
1. The Iowa State Soccer team (1-4-1) is set for a big weekend of non-conference action against a pair of unbeaten foes. The Cyclones will battle in-state rival Iowa (4-0-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. before a Sunday match-up against Milwaukee (4-0) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Cyclone Sports Complex and are set to be televised live by Cyclones.tv.
2. Friday's match against Iowa will mark the first competition of the 2018-19 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The winner will earn two points for their institution to kick-off the annual series. Iowa State won the 2017-18 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, 14-13, by nabbing the academics point to end the academic year.
3. The Cyclones will be looking to snap a three-game skid in the series vs. Iowa. The Hawkeyes claimed last year's match-up in Iowa City 1-0 in overtime on a golden goal, with Iowa's Olivia Fiegel notching the game-winner in the 98th minute.
4. Iowa State is coming off an 0-1-1 weekend on their road trip to Colorado. The Cyclones tied defending Summit League champion Denver in a scoreless double-overtime draw on Friday, before falling 3-1 to unbeaten Colorado in Boulder on Sunday.
5. Sophomore goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg recorded the fifth shutout of her career, and the second this season, in Friday's 0-0 draw at Denver. Schwichtenberg notched a pair of saves and got strong support from her defense, particularly the center back duo of Jordan Enga and Marin Daniel, who continued their excellent play this season.
6. The Cyclones fell 3-1 at CU on Sunday, but showed signs of improvement, particularly in the second half. After struggling to build the offensive attack with just one shot attempt in the first half, Iowa State racked up 8 shot attempts in the second stanza. Klasey Medelberg's goal in the 89th minute was the first surrendered by the Buffs this season. Schwichtenberg also made a career-high six saves in the match.
7. Iowa State head coach Tony Minatta has been looking for his team to start matches faster, and has tinkered with his starting lineup as a result. Most recently, a pair of freshman midfielders in Kara Privitera and Taylor Bee were inserted into the starting XI at Colorado. Fellow rookie Brooke Miller also played a season-high 47 minutes at outside back in the match.
SERIES vs. IOWA
Friday's Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk showdown will be the 21st meeting between the two squads in program history. The series dates back to Sep. 21, 1997, when the Cyclones stormed into Iowa City and departed with a 3-1 victory on the road over the Hawkeyes.
Iowa currently owns a 12-6-2 all-time record against Iowa State, and has currently won three-straight in the series. Most recently, the Hawkeyes were victorious in a 1-0 overtime victory at the UI Soccer Complex in 2017. Hawkeye Olivia Fiegel made the deciding play of the match, putting away golden goal in the 97th minute to win the rivalry fixture.
Iowa State's last victory over the Hawkeyes came on Sep. 5, 2014, when the Cyclones rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win, 2-1. Hayley Womack (57') and Alyssa Williamson (75') scored second-stanza goals to snap a six-match UI winning streak in the series.
SERIES vs. MILWAUKEE
The Iowa State and Milwaukee soccer programs have met five times on the pitch prior to Sunday's match at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones lead the all-time series with the Panthers, 3-2. The series began on Sep. 7, 1996 in what was just the third game of the Iowa State soccer program's inaugural season. The Panthers came out on top, 4-1.
Most recently, Tony Minatta's Cyclone squad traveled to Milwaukee on Sep. 11, 2016 for a non-conference match at Engelmann Stadium. Iowa State won a hard-fought, double-overtime thriller behind a golden goal in the 107th minute from then-sophomore and current senior team captain Emily Steil.
