Cyclones Drop Series Finale At No. 10 Texas, 7-2

AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (17-13, 0-3 Big 12) dropped its series finale at No. 10 Texas (29-6, 3-0 Big 12) on Sunday at Red & Charline McCombs Field. The Cyclones got an offensive boost from senior Sydney Stites, who went 2-of-3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Texas 7, Iowa State 2
The Longhorns took control early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-run home run by Kaitlyn Washington. Texas added to its lead in the ensuing frame, as Mary Iakopo drew a lead-off walk, followed by back-to-back base hits by Lauren Burke and Shannon Rhodes. Rhodes' shot to center field plated two runs to extend the UT lead to 4-0.

Texas was then able to capitalize on Iowa State's lone error of the day, as Ki'Audra Hayter eventually scored an unearned run on a Rhodes sacrifice bunt to put the Cyclones in a 5-0 hole.

The Iowa State offense came alive in the top of the sixth inning, jump-started by an infield single from Kaylee Bosworth. Stites, a senior, then stepped to the plate and launched a two-run bomb to left field to get the Cyclones on the board and cut Texas' lead to 5-2.

Texas tallied two more runs on two hits, upping their total to 10 base hits on the day to extend the Longhorn advantage to 7-2. The Cyclones were unable to come up with an answer in the seventh, dropping the series finale, 7-2.

Iowa State will play its home opener at the Cyclone Sports Complex on Friday vs. No. 14 Texas Tech. First pitch is 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live by Cyclones.tv.
