CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (2-0) opened its 2021 season with a pair of wins at the Doc Halverson UNI Dome Tournament on Friday. The Cyclones downed South Dakota State, 4-2, followed by a 12-2 run-rule victory over host UNI.
Senior Skyler Ramos had an outstanding day, going 5-of-6 at the plate with three runs, a double and a home run. Senior All-American Sami Williams went 3-of-6, clubbing two home runs with four RBI on the day.
Sophomore pitcher Ellie Spelhaug picked up both wins in the circle, pitching 7.0 innings total while giving up just two runs.
Iowa State 4, South Dakota State 2
Iowa State got an excellent start from sophomore pitcher Karlie Charles in the season-opener. Charles was sharp from the get-go, putting away the first nine Jackrabbit batters she faced. The native of The Colony, Texas, allowed her defense to control the game by inducing a high number ground outs throughout the game.
The Cyclones opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Fresh off a diving defensive highlight at second base in the top half of the inning, sophomore Alesia Ranches crushed a solo home run to left field to put ISU in front, 1-0. It was the third homer of Ranches' career.
Mikayla Ramos singled up the middle to give the Cyclones another offensive spark in the fourth inning. Sophomore speedster Lea Nelson then entered to pinch run. The native of Davenport, Iowa, stole second and then proceeded to score moments later on a SDSU fielding error, extending the lead to 2-0.
The South Dakota State offense came alive in the top of the sixth. The Jackrabbits tallied two runs on three triples with just one out in the frame. However, Ellie Spelhaug entered to pitch for Charles and got out of the jam with a pair of ground outs to preserve the 2-2 tie.
Sami Williams helped the Cyclones answer back in the bottom half of the inning. Iowa State's all-time home runs leader sent a moon shot well beyond the fence in left field to take back the lead at 3-2. Fellow senior Logan Schaben collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly to score Ramos later in the inning, and the Cyclones would tally their first win of the season, 4-2.
Iowa State 12, UNI 2
Senior Skyler Ramos set the tone for the Cyclones against UNI. Following a scoreless first inning, the native of Ventura, Calif., broke Friday night's game open with the first home run of her career – a three-run shot to right field. Ranches and freshman Kali Gose both drew walks to put the Cyclones in scoring position. Ramos, a senior, then stepped to the plate and crushed her first collegiate dinger over the wall in right field to put the Cyclones on top 3-0.
The Panthers responded with a run of their own in the home half of the second inning. Sammy Moss reached on a Cyclone throwing error, and later scored via a RBI single by teammate Ellie Owen. However, Ellie Spelhaug worked her way out of danger with a pair of strikeouts in the inning, keeping the Cyclones in front 3-1.
Iowa State added to its cushion in the top of the third. Ranches and Milaysia Ochoa singled, followed by a hit by pitch for Gose. Skyler Ramos then stepped to the plate and picked up her career-high fourth RBI of the game on an infield single that scored Ranches. Carli Spelhaug was then hit by pitch with the bases still loaded to score another run.
Three more Cyclone runs crossed home plate in the fifth, as Jayden McKeague, Carli Spelhaug and Mikayla Ramos all picked up RBIs to extend the Iowa State advantage to 8-1.
The Cyclones put on the finishing touches with a four-run top of the sixth to secure a run-rule victory. McKeague single to right field to make it 9-1, before Williams stepped to the plate and launched a three-run shot to right center. UNI tallied a run in the home half, but it would not be enough as the Cyclones improved to 2-0 on the day.
