LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State was unable to pick up its first win over a ranked team this season, falling to the 24th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders 2-0 on the road.
The Cyclones (3-7-5, 1-3-3 Big 12) were shut out for the third-straight conference contest and were unable to match TTU's two scores. The Red Raiders (11-2-2, 6-0-2 Big 12) extended their win/tie streak to 11, having not dropped a match since Aug. 25.
Sophia Thomas and Seulgi Lee logged the only shots for the Cyclones, each firing one off. Thomas's shot was on target but was saved by TTU. Avery Gillahan had another 6-plus save performance but was unable to record a third consecutive shutout. Isabella Agrusso, was the only Cyclone in the field to play the whole 90 minutes.
Texas Tech's Taylor Zdrojewski (5) and Macy Blackburn (4) led the team in shots, with both Blackburn and Ashleigh Williams recording scores. Blackburn and Zdrojewski were tied for the game-high in shots on goal with a pair apiece. TTU keeper Faith Nguyen had one save on the afternoon.
The Red Raiders held a 21-2 shot advantage as well as an 8-1 shot on goal edge. Iowa State had six saves to Texas Tech's one while TTU had more fouls, 14-11.
How it Happened
Iowa State and Texas Tech battled back and forth in the first half, neither conceding anything on the scoreboard. TTU had nine shots to ISU's one in the first stanza, with Gillahan nabbing three saves to keep the board clean.
After five straight shut-out halves of play, Texas Tech broke ISU's shutout streak in the second half, putting two balls in the net. The first score came in the 60th minute off of a free kick from about 40 yards out.
A Red Raider run was brought down in the box by Isabella Agrusso in the 67th minute, drawing a free kick. Ashlieh Williams converted the TTU PK and made it 2-0.
TTU locked it down from there on, holding on for a two-goal win.
ISU really didn't allow any Texas Tech set pieces or offense to result in goals, with both scores coming on a fluke long ball and the other on a PK.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We knew this would be a test on the road, but we battled brilliantly. We gave away no real chances and their goal was so unfortunate for us. I'd like to see us be a little more patient with the ball and a little more aggressive in the box, but it was another gutsy performance from a group that is incredibly committed."
