AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's offense exploded on opening night, as the Cyclones net three goals, blanking Western Illinois, 3-0. It marks the second-straight season that ISU has won its season opener.
Iowa State (1-0-0) scored its most goals since 2022 on Thursday, as three different Cyclones got in on the scoring action. Western Illinois (0-1-0) was outshot 24-4 as it dropped its lone Power 4 game of the season.
The Cyclones wasted little time in their 2024 campaign, attacking early and often. The constant pressure broke through in the early eighth minute, as Magdalena Keck converted off a corner kick to put the Cyclones up 1-0.
Not even three minutes later, ISU found itself in another corner kick opportunity. Again, Yira Yoggerst took the corner, sending it into a fray of players. The ball went untouched eventually making its way to Chloe Broughton who rifled it in to make it a 2-0 advantage.
By the end of the first half, ISU was outshooting WIU 12-3 and had six corner kicks to Western Illinois's zero.
The second half began much like the first, with the Cyclones applying pressure. After a handful of shots, ISU converted another goal in the 51st minute, courtesy of Morgan Furmaniak. Furmaniak's score was her first in a Cyclone uniform.
From there, Iowa State continued to apply the offensive pressure, keeping the ball predominately in the Leatherneck half of the field, but was unable to come away with anything to show for it.
Cyclone goalkeeper Avery Gillahan was not tested very often, collecting one save on the evening. On the other side of the field, WIU goalkeeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez dealt with a flurry of shots, saving six.
Fannon's Thoughts
"Clearly everyone took the wake-up call from the exhibition really well. Everyone's trained really hard over the last week. It's hard to find too many complaints. Everybody tonight performed as well as they can from an individual basis. There were large chunks of the match where we as a team did everything right and I'm incredibly proud."
