HOUSTON, Texas– No. 25 Iowa State (19-5, 9-4 Big 12) took the four-set win at Houston (8-16, 1-12 Big 12) Thursday night as Christy Johnson-Lynch sealed career win No. 399.
After falling in the first 18-25, Iowa State won a marathon of a set to tie it up in the second 32-30. The Cyclones kept it rolling in the third to take the lead with a set score of 25-21, and closed things out in the fourth winning it 25-20.
Amiree Hendricks-Walker and Faith DeRonde led ISU with 12 kills, with Hendricks-Walker hitting at .455 and leading ISU with four blocks. Faith DeRonde had five kills and an ace in the third set alone as she went on to achieve her total hitting at .345. Nayeli Ti'a took over in the fourth with five kills in the frame, totaling 10 kills as three hit in double figures.
Three had 10-plus digs led by star libero Rachel Van Gorp with 12. DeRonde had the first double-double of her career adding 10 digs to her stat line, and Tierney Jackson also had 10 for a career high.
SET ONE
Iowa State took its first lead at 10-9, while Alea Goolsby extended the Cyclone run to four with her second kill to make it 12-9 and cause a timeout by the host. The Cougars came back to lead 14-12 as Iowa State called a timeout of its own, and ties would follow at 16s and 17s but Houston reached 20 first (20-18). ISU was held scoreless the remainder of the set.
SET TWO
Jackson had back-to-back kills to give ISU the 3-1 lead, and a lead change followed at 5-4. With Houston up 8-4, Goolsby halted the Cougars' run with her fifth kill. ISU continued to inch toward the lead as Maya Duckworth and Reagan Hanfelt put up a wall at 9-8. ISU then tied it next at 9s and 10s on kills by Lilly Wachholz, and would get the lead back at 12-11. Multiple ties followed, while Goolsby broke one with her seventh kill to make it 17-16. At 19-19, UH laid down a kill to again win the race to 20. The lead flipped again at 21-20 and ISU battled on to find set point at 24-23, but after an ISU service error and a Houston ace the Cougars reached set point. The set extended, with a combined six additional set points seen. With Houston up 30-29, Iowa State won a 40-second rally on a block and went on to tie things up on a kill by Hendricks-Walker at 32-30.
SET THREE
Houston took the first four points and remained up at 11-6 as Iowa State called its first timeout of the set. The Cyclones won another long rally to come back within two, and ISU took the next three to take the lead at 15-14 after DeRonde went back-to-back. DeRonde stayed hot laying down an ace to keep ISU up at 19-16 leading to Houston's second called timeout. The Cyclones controlled the set, taking it 25-21 as DeRonde sent over her eighth kill without an error.
SET FOUR
The set opened evenly, and DeRonde put down kill No. 10 to make it 8-8. After an ace by Abbi Brenizer and kill by Hendricks-Walker, ISU took a brief 11-10 lead. Iowa State quickly got the lead back, and went up 15-13 after kills by a trio of Cyclones. Ti'a had her fifth kill of the set as the Cyclones reached 20 (20-16) and ISU went on to win it with a match winner by Wachholz at 25-20.
