CYCLONES vs. HORNED FROGS
Iowa State and TCU meet for the 16th time in the programs' history and the eighth time in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs own a 9-6 edge in the all-time series, but ISU has won four of the last five meetings.
Rocco Becht's first extended action of his career came in the 2022 meeting, a 62-14 loss in Fort Worth. Becht entered the game on the first possession of the second half, when TCU had it in hand after Hunter Dekkers left the game due to injury. A true freshman at the time, Becht completed 7-of-13 passes for 65 yards and an interception.
RUNNING THE BALL
Iowa State is one of three teams nationally, and the only in the Big 12, with two players with 550 yards rushing in Carson Hansen (613) and Abu Sama III (558). The last time ISU had two players top 600 rushing yards in the same season was 1982 (Tommy Davis, Harold Brown).
As a team, ISU is averaging 5.5 yards per carry over the last three games.
Paving the way for the Cyclone running backs is a veteran offensive line. Offensive tackle Tyler Miller has made 36-consecutive starts for the Cyclones, the longest active start streak among Big 12 offensive linemen. In total, four different Cyclone o-linemen have 20-plus career starts (Miller - 47, James Neal III - 29, Brendan Black - 27, Jim Bonifas - 22).
KEY STORYLINES
- Iowa State is 9-4 in its last 13 road games.
- The Cyclone defense allowed just six fourth quarter offensive touchdowns in 2024, tied for the fewest among Big 12 programs. This season, ISU has allowed just four fourth quarter offensive TDs in the first nine games.
- Rocco Becht has accounted for 19 touchdowns (11 passing, eight rushing) this season. He is one of 10 FBS quarterbacks with at least 10 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns this season.
- Becht's next rushing TD will break Brock Purdy's school record (19) for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
- Iowa State is the only team nationally with two tight ends with at least 24 receptions in Benjamin Brahmer (32) and Gabe Burkle (24).
- Burkle has a reception in 15-straight games.
- Wide receiver Brett Eskildsen is averaging 18.8 yards per reception, which ranks No. 19 nationally and third in the Big 12.
- Sophomore defensive back Marcus Neal Jr. has compiled 8.0 tackles for a loss this season, the most since O'Rien Vance had 10.0 in 2022.
- Last week against Arizona State, Neal recorded eight tackles, including two for a loss, an interception and a forced fumble.
- Domonique Orange improved his conditioning during the offseason in hopes of playing more snaps. The result has been noticeable with Orange topping 40 defensive snaps in seven of nine games this season, including 55 against Arizona State. Last season he played 40-plus defensive snaps just once.
- Defensive backs David Coffey and Josh Patterson made their first career starts last week against Arizona State.
