PRIMER: No. 6 ISU Opens Season Hosting Cyclone Invitational

AMES, Iowa -Â Iowa State opens its ninth season under head coach Kevin Dresser with the inaugural Cyclone Invitational presented by Daily's Premium Meats Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. inside Hilton Coliseum. It is the first time since the 2019-20 season that ISU begins its season with an individual tournament instead of a dual.
The winner of each weight class will go home with bacon and swag courtesy of the title sponsor, Daily's Premium Meats.

SEASON STORYLINES
- Following a 2024-25 season which saw several key Cyclones go down with season-ending injuries, Dresser and his staff have reloaded their squad. For the first time since 1982-83, ISU enters a season with seven past All-Americans on its roster.
- ISU's 2025-26 dual slate features six teams that finished inside the top 15 at last year's NCAA Championships, including three of the top six teams. Overall, Iowa State's dual slate features 10 of the top 25 teams from the 2025 national tournament.
- Iowa State welcomed nine newcomers to its roster for the 2025-26 season, three freshman and six from the transfer portal.Â
- Dresser and Co. utilized the transfer portal to add several high-impact pieces to the roster, including three former All-Americans - Rocky Elam (Missouri), Stevo Poulin (UNCO) and Vinny Zerban (UNCO). Isaac Dean (Rider), a 2025 NCAA Qualifier who reached the Round of 16 last season, also joined the Cyclones.
- Those new faces joined a group of returners that already had four past All-Americans among it - Jacob Frost (2025), Evan Frost (2024), Anthony Echemendia (2024) and Yonger Bastida (2022).Â
- Additionally, six of ISU's eight NCAA Qualifiers from last season are back to improve their finish from the NCAA Championships.
- Iowa State also returns two-time Big 12 Champion Paniro Johnson. Last season, Johnson won the second 149-pound conference title of his career and compiled a 27-6 record. He registered dual victories at 149, 157 and 165 pounds during the regular season.
- Jacob Frost placed seventh at the 2025 NCAA Championships after navigating a bracket that was loaded with seven returning All-Americans and two national champions. He finished the season with a 33-9 record and 16 bonus-point victories (3 WBF, 9 TF, 4 MD). Eight of his nine losses on the season came against wrestlers who finished sixth or better at the NCAA Championships. The other loss was against 2023 national champion Andrew Alriez at the Big 12 Championship, which he avenged at the national tournament.
- Heavyweight Yonger Bastida is back for his senior campaign after missing the 2024-25 season due to injury. Bastida is ranked in the top three in all major preseason polls and as high as No. 1 by InterMat. Last weekend, he defeated Michigan's No. 4 Taye Ghadiali at the All-Star Classic, 8-2.
- Iowa State finished the 2024-25 season with a 12-5 dual record, including a 6-2 mark in Big 12 duals. It marked Dresser's fourth-consecutive season with 12 or more dual victories.
