AMES, Iowa – No. 3 Iowa State (17-4, 7-3 Big 12) lost for the first time this season in Hilton Coliseum in an 80-61 setback to Kansas State (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats led by as many as 19 points early in the second half and never let up to end the Cyclones' 29-game homecourt winning streak, the second-longest in school history.
KSU, which had five players in double-figures, led by Dug McDaniels' 20 points, needed a strong shooting performance to complete the upset and they got it. The Wildcats were 10-of-20 (50 pct.) from 3-point range and 18-of-21 (85.7 pct.) at the free-throw line.
Tamin Lipsey led the Cyclones with 20 points, his third 20-point outing of the season. He also tied a season high with a trio of 3-pointers. Joshua Jefferson added 13 points and five rebounds and Demarion Watson came off the bench to lead ISU on the boards with seven.
The Cyclones only trailed by two at the break but couldn't get their offense going in the second half, shooting just 22.0 pct. (9-of-33).
 How it Happened
After spotting Iowa State a 13-4 lead, the Wildcats bounced back with a 13-3 run to move ahead 17-6 at the 12-minute mark of the opening period. Coleman Hawkins had seven points to shift momentum to the visitors.
KSU continued to maintain a lead throughout the next six minutes as the Cyclones uncharacteristically had eight turnovers in the first 12 minutes of the contest. The only way ISU was able to keep the game close was 3-point shooting, connecting on its first five attempts, including a pair from Curtis Jones. Â
The Wildcats led 28-23 with under seven minutes until ISU slowly retook the lead with a Lipsey 3-pointer. But a 9-2 Wildcat run to end the half gave KSU a 37-35 lead at the break, marking the first second-half deficit for the Cyclones at home this season.
Hawkins gave the Wildcats a 44-35 advantage at the beginning of the second half with a 3-pointer. KSU kept it rolling and soon had a 19-point lead (58-39) when Brendan Hausen drilled a 3-pointer with 13:45 remaining.
The Cyclones then went on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to 58-52 for a brief glimmer of hope. Lipsey and Jefferson had 3-pointers in the run, but Hausen came right back with a 3-pointer to start an 8-2 run to take the life out of the crowd.
Key Performer
Tamin Lipsey tied a season-high with 20 points and equaled his season-high in 3-pointers with three. It was his third 20-point game of the season and fifth of his career. He also dished out three assists and had a steal to give him 215 in his career, the second-most in school history.
