STILLWATER, Okla. – It was more history for Iowa State (20-18, 9-6 Big 12) on Sunday, as the Cyclones clinched the series with an 8-4 win over No. 17 Oklahoma State (24-14, 6-7 Big 12) to secure the first road series win over a ranked opponent in school history.
Two days after earning the most Big 12 wins in a single season in program history, Iowa State eclipsed the all-time conference win record as it earned its ninth of the year (passing the previous high of eight set in 1993). The Cyclones had previously never won more than two conference series in a season until today when they earned their third of the season.
The Cyclones pounced early on the Cowgirls, plating five runs in the first two frames en route to their series win over the Cowgirls in Stillwater since 1987. Three Cowgirl errors also helped the Cyclones win, as the team now sits in fourth place in the Big 12 standings and has won two consecutive series over OSU.
Freshmen were the story of the game for ISU, as the trio of Sereniti Trice, Jessie Clemons and Karlee Ford combined to produce seven of the team's 11 hits on the day. Another story of the game was Sydney Malott who hammered her fourth home run of the series. Fellow transfer Reagan Bartholomew joined the freshman trio as the lone other Cyclone with multiple hits on the day.
In the circle, Lauren Schurman got the start for the Cyclones, going 3.1 innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. Jaiden Ralston (6-6) would relieve Schurman and handle 3.2 frames of work, allowing three runs on five hits as she pulled her record back to even on the year.
For Oklahoma State, Tallen Edwards led the way with two hits and two RBI, while Karli Godwin also notched two knocks on the afternoon. Katie Kuts (7-5) started the game for OSU but was quickly relieved by Ruby Meylan after allowing five runs in the first 1.1 innings of work. RyLee Crandall also saw the circle, finishing the last two innings after Meylan.
How it Happened
For the third time this series, Iowa State got on the board first as it plated a pair in the top of the first. Trice and Clemons led the game off with back-to-back singles, and each were able to take an extra base thanks to an OSU fielding error. An Allen walk later would load the bases. With two outs and the bases juiced, Ford smacked a single into right to plate both Trice and Clemons and give the Cyclones an early edge. A Bartholomew walk would then reload the bases for ISU. Nosan drew a second-straight free pass and pushed across
The Cowgirls would threaten in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases. With two outs, Rachael Hathoot sent a dribbler to Malott at first who touched the bag and ended the frame.
In the second, the Cyclones would tack on two more. Clemons would draw a one-out walk and then subsequently steal second. With Clemons in scoring position, Malott launched her fourth home run of the series to extend the lead, 5-0.
The Cowgirls would go three-up, three-down in the bottom of the second, but rebounded to get on the board in the third. With two outs and a runner on first, Karli Godwin drove a double into left-center to put two in scoring position. A walk later and the Cowgirls had the bases loaded for the second time on the afternoon. An ISU fielding error would allow one run to come across, but the very next Cowgirl would line out to end the inning.
After Oklahoma State took advantage of an ISU error in the third, the Cyclones flipped the script in the fourth as they capitalized on a pair of OSU miscues to score two more. With two outs and runners on first and second, Ford sent a ball up the middle to the OSU shortstop who booted the ball and allowed an ISU run to come across. Now with runners on the corners, an OSU attempt to catch a Cyclone stealing resulted in another error and allowed for a seventh run to score as ISU pushed its lead to 7-1.
The Cowgirls added a second run in the fifth, trimming the ISU lead to five. A double and single would put runners on the bases for OSU to start the inning. Later, with two outs, Tia Warsop singled through the left side to plate a run and make it 7-2.
The final bit of scoring came in the sixth frame, as each team saw runners cross the plate. For the Cyclones, Ford smoked a one-out homer over the right field fence to secure her second long ball of the season and make it 8-2 in favor of the Cyclones.
In the bottom half of the frame, OSU answered with a homer of its own. Megan Bloodworth led off with a single before Tallen Edwards towered a ball down over the right field fence to cut the Cyclone lead in half, 8-4.
Only three batters from each side would see action in the seventh, as OSU went down quietly and Iowa State earned its first ever ranked road series win.
