AMES, Iowa – Iowa State softball coach Jamie Pinkerton has announced the signing of Maggie Werner, a utility player transfer from Minnesota.
Werner, a Greenville, Wisconsin, native, is a graduate transfer who will have one year of eligibility remaining with the Cyclones after spending the last four seasons with the Gophers.
"Maggie will be a Swiss Army knife player for us," said Coach Pinkerton. "She's a super athlete who has played every position except for pitcher and catcher. She has excellent tools and can lead off or can hit in the middle of the order. We'll also look for her to bring leadership skills to our young team roster."
A utility player in every sense of the word, Werner played in all fielding positions but catcher and shortstop for the Gophers this past season. Despite the constant shuffling on defense, she held a .990 fielding percentage on 290 total chances.
Werner stayed a steady presence at the plate, leading Minnesota in multiple categories during her redshirt junior season. She was the only Gopher to hold a batting average over .300, slashing .311/.426/.489. Her 42 hits and 26 runs led the team, as did her 25 free passes.
After redshirting her initial season in Minneapolis, Werner saw her role grow throughout the years. Used primarily as a pinch runner as a redshirt freshman, she cracked into the starting lineup as a redshirt sophomore and saw time both at first and second base.
A three-time Academic All-Big Ten member, Werner earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2026. The award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academic achievement, and good citizenship both on and off the field.
