SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Iowa State (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) handed UCSB (3-1, 0-0 Big West) its first loss of the season winning in four by set scores of 18-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-21 Thursday night.

UCSB took the first, but Iowa State answered hitting at .394 in the second to tie up the match. The Cyclones won the next two to take the road win, ending the night hitting at .320.

Nayeli Gonzalez (18) and Nayeli Ti'a (17) once again led the Cyclones in kills. Ti'a made it six matches in a row to hit in double figures, and hit her 17 at an efficiency of .371. Lilly Wachholz joined the duo in double figures with 12 hit at .526.

Rachel Van Gorp led with 13 digs, while Ava Martin totaled 42 assists on the night. Freshman D'Aaliyah Kemp led Cyclone blockers with three.

SET ONE

The two sides scored evenly up to a tie at 12s, before the host hit a run of three to lead at the first media timeout. Back-to-back kills by Gonzalez made it a two-point set at 16-14, but two Gaucho kills followed as ISU called a timeout. UCSB kept with the lead to take the opener 25-18. Gonzalez led the Cyclones with five kills.

SET TWO

Wachholz put down two kills to start the frame, while Gonzalez put down another to keep the home team off the board. ISU remained with the lead before the Gauchos flipped it at 10-9 on a run of five. Pam McCune and Alea Goolsby teamed up on a block knotting the score at 12s, while ties continued up through point 16. ISU got the lead back at 17-16, but the back-and-forth battle continued. The Cyclones won the race to 20 (20-18) on a Wachholz kill, while the right side hitter totaled her sixth of the set to put the score at 22-18 and force another timeout. Neither side let up as the set extended, but the Cyclones came out on top at 26-24 on Gonzalez' ninth kill.

SET THREE
Gonzalez totaled kill No. 10 to make it 2-2, and sent over her 11th to give ISU an edge of 6-5. A UCSB error and ace by Wachholz came next to stretch a run of three while the host called an early timeout. Ti'a then had two big kills as ISU remained up at 13-7, and the Cyclone duo of Kemp and Wachholz put up a wall at 15-11 keeping the momentum with Iowa State. ISU again won the race to 20 as Ti'a joined Gonzalez in double figures and the Cyclones went on to take the match lead with a set score of 25-20.

SET FOUR

Every point was fought for, with UCSB holding the narrow advantage of 15-14 at the media timeout. Ti'a continued laying down kills with her 17th, bringing the Cyclones ahead 18-16 while ISU built a lead of three (22-19) on an Abbi Brenizer ace. Brenizer put another down right after and the Cyclones pressed on to win the match with a set score of 25-21.
