Frank Nogel serves as Special Advisor to the Athletics Director and assists with major gift fundraising for Name, Image & Likeness (NIL), CyTown Suites and other special projects.
Nogel previously served as Iowa State’s Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations from 2005-22. He has also worked as Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs (2003-05), Assistant Athletics Director for Major Gifts (2002-03) and Director of Development (2000-02). He first returned to his alma mater as a member of the ISU Foundation staff in 1999, and all-told has nearly 40 years of success in the areas of advancement, business development and revenue generation.
During his tenure, he led the Cyclone Club’s annual fund, major gifts, premium seating sales & service, ticket operations and special events units. Nogel also served as the primary administrator for bowl games & post-season men’s basketball travel and was the department’s liaison to the Cyclone Gridiron Club, ISU Alumni Association and ISU Foundation. In addition, he had previously overseen the areas of marketing & promotions, radio & television, food & beverage, Cyclone Sports Properties and the ISU Letterwinners Club.
Under Nogel’s leadership, all-time fundraising and season ticket sales records were set multiple times, and these two areas generated more than $50 million annually. He and his team also created and launched several popular outreach events, including Cy’s House of Trivia, the Cyclone Tailgate Tour and the annual All-Sports Letterwinners Reunion.

Nogel managed several capital campaigns that resulted in more than $325 million in new or renovated facilities including the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility, French Academic Center, major renovations to Jack Trice Stadium (including Jacobson Plaza), Sukup Basketball Complex, Cyclone Sports Complex, Bergstrom Football Complex, south end zone renovations (including Sukup End Zone Club), Golf Performance Center, McKee Indoor Tennis Complex, Stark Performance Center, Albaugh Family Plaza, Gateway Pedestrian Bridge and RV Village.
Nogel also played a key role in securing a $15 million naming rights sponsorship for the football field (MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium).
Prior to joining the Iowa State staff, he spent five years as Vice President of Marketing and Operations for the Arena Football League’s Iowa Barnstormers. Nogel also worked for the Greater Des Moines Grand Prix and started his career in athletics administration at Drake University.
Nogel was selected to attend the Division 1A Athletics Director's Institute in 2006 and 2007 and the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Senior Administrators Mentoring Institute in 2016. He has been a member of the National Association of Athletics Development Directors (NAADD) since 2000.
He is a graduate of Leadership Ames and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Story County and on the Community Grants Committee for Discover Ames. Nogel has also served on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Sports Foundation, Ames Chamber of Commerce, Ames High School Booster Club and Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation.
The Des Moines native earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State. He and his wife, Cheryl, have two grown children, Ashley and Joseph.
