STILLWATER, Okla. - Amie Ford held Oklahoma State hitless through the first three innings and Ashley Killeen went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Iowa State past the Cowgirls, 7-3, in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
The win, head coach Stacy Gemeinhardt's first career Big 12 win, marks Iowa State's second Big 12 season opening win all-time and the first since 2002.
Killeen blasted her fifth home run, a two-run shot in the first inning, to put the Cyclones on top early. Killeen's homer scored Fallon Johnson, who led off the game with a triple that sailed over the left fielder's head.
The Cyclones struck again in the third inning on a RBI single by Killeen, who recorded a hit for a career-high seventh straight game.
Iowa State (15-11, 1-0 Big 12) erased any doubt with a four-run two-out rally in the fifth inning.
Ellen Buehner started the rally with an infield single with one down. After Oklahoma State (13-14, 0-1 Big 12) starting pitcher Jessica Hoppock struck out Killeen, Katie Reichling ripped a double to advance Buehner to third. Hoppock then walked Jessica Quade to load the bases before Beth Tharp and Jennifer Bigbee came through with a pair of two-run doubles to increase the Cyclone lead to 7-0.
The Cowgirls closed the gap to 7-3 after scoring once in the fifth and twice in the sixth but Ford and relief pitcher Alyssa Ransom shut the door on the OSU rally.
Bigbee and Buehner both went 2-for-3 for Iowa State while Ford (9-5) allowed just one earned run on six hits.
Hoppock (7-9) allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in the loss.
The Cyclones and Cowgirls will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale at Cowgirl Stadium.
