AMES, Iowa - Jennifer Bigbee homered in the fifth inning and Iowa State scored all six runs with two outs to defeat No. 16 Nebraska, 6-5, in Big 12 action on Tuesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
Iowa State, who defeated No. 15 Texas A&M, 14-6, on Saturday, improves to 19-20 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play. Nebraska falls to 32-8 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
With Iowa State trailing 5-4 in the sixth, Bigbee drilled her third home run of the season, a two-out, two-run shot just inside the left field foul pole that plated Katie Reichling. Bigbee, who went 118 career games without a home run, has homered in three of the last five games.
The game went back-and-forth through the first three and a half innings.
Nebraska got on the board in the top of the second on a RBI single from KoKo Tacha. Carmen Kier added a sacrifice fly in the inning to put the Huskers up 2-0.
Iowa State bounced back to tie the game in its half of the second. Jessica Quade got the rally started with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Whitney Perkins. After Cary Akins singled to advance Perkins to second, Beth Tharp delivered the first two-out hit of the game, a two-run double to right field. Tharp was thrown out advancing to third but Akins crossed home just before the third out to knot the game at 2-2.
The Huskers took the lead again in the third as Jessica Yoachim scored on a fielding error by the Cyclones.
ISU showed its resilience again in the next frame, adding two more runs to take back the lead.
Katie Reichling hustled to beat out an infield single that grazed the pitchers glove. On the play, Fallon Johnson and Kristy Olsen raced in to score and put the Cyclones back on top 4-3.
Katie Linke and Kier belted a pair of home runs in the fourth as the advantage went back over to Nebraska.
After Bigbee's homer gave the lead back to the Cyclones, Iowa State pitcher Alyssa Ransom settled in and took control of the game, retiring the final seven batters of the game to pick up the win.
Ransom (9-11) allowed nine hits but struck out six Husker batters. The win, Ransom's 30th of her career, was her third straight and fifth career win against ranked opponents.
Molly Hill (17-2) was dealt just her second loss of the season. Hill walked three batters and allowed two runs in two innings in relief.
Akins went 2-for-2 while Bigbee, Reichling and Tharp each drove in two runs to lead the Cyclones.
The Huskers, who out-hit Iowa State nine to seven, lost just their second game when out-hitting their opponent.
The Cyclones and Huskers will meet again on Thursday in Lincoln, Neb. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Bowlin Stadium.
