AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (27-19, 7-11 Big 12) couldn't complete a season sweep of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, falling to Iowa (24-22, 6-12 Big Ten) in the second meeting of the season, 7-2.
The Cyclones' explosive offense couldn't get going against Iowa's pitching staff, as Iowa State, which averaged nine runs a game last week, only mustered two on six hits. ISU would go on to leave nine runners on base.
Jessie Clemons and Tatum Johnson each had a team-high two hits, with Johnson having one of the team's two doubles. Victoria Prado had the team's only RBI on a single in the sixth frame.
In the circle, Ava Mullen (4-5) got the start, handling the first 2.2 innings of work. Both Jaiden Ralston and Lauren Schurman would see time in relief, with Schurman owning the team's only strikeout.
Iowa scattered its eight hits across six players, with Kiara Sipe being the only Hawkeye with multiple knocks. Both Leah McAnally and Phoenyx Silva had three-run home runs, each ending with three RBI to lead all players. Three of Iowa's eight hits were homers. Serayah Neiss (11-7) got the start for Iowa, holding ISU to two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first frame, Iowa got on the board first in the second. After drawing a pair of walks, Silva blasted an 0-1 ball over the right center fence to put the Hawkeyes on the board, 3-0.
Iowa added a fourth run in the third thanks to a Sipe solo shot, extending the lead to 4-0.
Neither team scored in the fourth, but Iowa struck again in the fifth, again using the long ball. With runners on following a HBP and a single, Leah McAnally towered a ball over the left field fence to make it 7-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
The Cyclones would score two runs in the final two frames, but were not able to string together much of a rally, falling by five to the Hawkeyes.
