Panthers Down Cyclones For Split

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Stephanie Aguero went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as Northern Iowa held off a late Iowa State rally and defeat the Cyclones, 6-3, to earn the series split Wednesday at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex.
The Panthers (11-13) out hit Iowa State (21-12), 11 to seven, and the Cyclones were unable to take advantage of three UNI errors, leaving seven on base.
Iowa State jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a second-inning Carrie Monroe single that scored Amanda Bradberry, who walked and stole second with two-outs.
Northern Iowa responded with two runs in the third and four in the fourth to go on top 6-1. Aguero set the Panther offense in motion with a two-run homer in the third and followed with a RBI single in the fourth. Heather Tarter also plated two runs with a fourth-inning double.
Jacquelyn Beatty cut into the lead with her fourth home run of the season, this one a solo shot that made it 6-2.
The Cyclones managed to score a run and bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh but UNI hurler Ashley Lepley got Beatty to strike out this time around, giving the Panthers the win.
Monroe and Kristy Olsen finished with two hits each for the Cyclones.
Rachel Zabriskie (11-4) took the loss, giving up five runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Lepley (6-4) went the distance to pick up the win. Lepley struck out seven Cyclone batters in the game.
Iowa State opens a seven-game home stand Saturday as it hosts Texas in the first game of its Big 12 series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
