Four-Run Sixth Inning Lifts ISU Past Drake, 5-1

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 game and pick up the 5-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Drake Wednesday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak and marked the first time the Cyclones had scored five or more runs since March 26 against Northern Iowa.
The Cyclones (24-18) trailed Drake (18-17) 1-0 after Marilyn Buss hit her third homer of the season in the first inning.
The teams were scoreless until the fifth as ISU hurler Charissa Carlin and Drake pitcher Jenna DeLong kept their opponents off the scoreboard. Carlin (9-6) allowed just four hits after giving up the homer to Buss.
The Cyclones knotted the score up in the fifth after Amanda Bradberry led off with a triple to right center. Sydni Jones took the next pitch to center field for the sacrifice fly, tying it at 1-1.
After Carlin shut down the Bulldogs in the sixth, ISU's offense came alive for four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kelsey Kidwell got things started with a one-out triple over the head of Drake centerfielder Kristin Birocci. The Bulldogs intentionally walked Courtney Wray and then issued an unintentional free pass to Alex Johnson. Bradberry then came through again with a two-run single that plated Kidwell and Wray and made it 3-1 Cyclones.
After DeLong got Jones to strike out, Jacquelyn Beatty and Carrie Monroe came through with a pair of two-out singles to run the score to 5-1.
Carlin allowed a two-out single in the seventh inning but struck out Mandy Osborn to give ISU its 24th win of the season, matching its total from a year ago. Carlin struck out five while scattering five hits to get the complete game win.
Beatty, Bradberry, Kidwell and Monroe each had two hits for the Cyclones.
DeLong (3-6) allowed nine hits and five runs to take the loss.
Iowa State will travel to Oklahoma State for a weekend series against the Cowgirls. First pitch for Saturday's game is slated for noon.
