Cyclones Drop 3-1 Decision To Creighton

AMES, Iowa ? Tara Oltman struck out 12 and allowed just three hits to lift Creighton past Iowa State, 3-1, in the first game of a rain-shortened doubleheader Wednesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The second game of the doubleheader was called in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain.

Oltman (26-10), a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, controlled the game from the start, allowing only one hit over the first five innings of the game. The junior allowed only Kelsey Kidwell, who singled to right field in the third inning, to reach base prior to giving up two hits in the sixth.

The Bluejays (32-14) got things going in the fourth inning with a leadoff homer by Michelle Graner. CU would tack on runs in the fifth and sixth innings on a run-scoring single from Bailey Dawson and hit by pitch that plated a run and sent Renae Sinkler to first.

ISU (23-28) made things interesting in the sixth as Kidwell again came through with her second hit of the game and advanced to second by stealing her second base of the contest. Bianca Lopez then singled to drive in Kidwell, cutting the deficit to two at 3-1. After Amanda Bradberry drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second, Oltman got cleanup hitter Alex Johnson to ground out, ending the inning.

Oltman capped her performance by striking out two of three in the seventh to win her 26th game of the season.

Rachel Zabriskie (16-23) took the loss for the Cyclones, giving up a run on three hits in 3.1 innings. Zabriskie struck out five to run her season total to 212, which is third in ISU's single-season record book.

Seven hitters singled for the Bluejays in the contest.

The Cyclones will host Kansas Saturday and Sunday as they wrap up regular-season play. First pitch for Saturday's game is slated for 2 p.m.
