ATHENS, Ga. - Iowa State scored seven runs in the first inning to cruise to an 11-3 win over Charleston Southern in the final game of the Georgia Softball Classic. The Cyclones improve to 7-9 this season.
Kelsey Kidwell led the Cyclones with three hits, while Heidi Kidwell and Amanda Bradberry added two each. Iowa State got two RBI each from 3-4-5 hitters Courtney Wray, Alex Johnson and Sydni Jones.
The Cyclones bats came alive in the first inning to the tune of seven quick runs. ISU collected six hits and drew a pair of walks to hit around in the inning.
Heidi Kidwell and Kelsey Kidwell both reached base and stole second to start the inning. After Heidi Kidwell scored on Wray's fielder's choice, Johnson set a new school record with her 34th career double that drove in a run to make it 2-0.
Jones then followed with a double of her own that plated Wray and Johnson. Two batters later Bradberry singled to score Jones and in her second plate appearance of the inning, Heidi Kidwell singled to score Carrie Monroe, who walked earlier in the inning.
In the second, Monroe drove in Erica Miller with a single to make it 8-0 in favor of the Cyclones. Miller pinch hit for Tori Torrescano and delivered a two-out single.
Wray and Johnson each drove in a run in the third as the Cyclone lead climbed to 10-0.
CSU got a run back in the fourth off Wray, who relieved Zabriskie to start the inning. Two errors complicated things for Wray and Courtney Konyk delivered a run-scoring single.
After the Buccaneers scored two more in the top of the fifth to stay alive, ISU got a run to take the 11-3, run-rule win.
Carleigh Berry singled and stole second to open the bottom of the fifth and eventually scored on a throwing error by CSU centerfielder Konyk.
Zabriskie (7-5) picked up her 40th career win, tossing four innings of two-hit shutout ball. The junior struck out 10 in the contest.
Charleston Southern pitcher Morgan Dowdy (1-1) suffered the loss. Dowdy lasted just one-third of an inning, allowing seven runs on four hits.
Iowa State will be back in action next weekend when it travels to the Razorback Invitational. The Cyclones open play Friday with games against Eastern Illinois and Southern Mississippi.
