LINCOLN, Neb. - Iowa State took advantage of a four-run first inning and held on to defeat Nebraska, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium. With the win, Iowa State improves to 25-21 overall and 3-7 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones have now beat Nebraska three times in a row for the first time since 1992-93.
Iowa State opened the game with four runs in the first despite just one hit. Husker starting pitcher Robin Mackin was unable to find the strike zone, walking five and hitting one batter.
The only ISU hit, a single through the right side, came from Courtney Wray and plated Heidi and Kelsey Kidwell, who walked to lead off the game. Amanda Bradberry and Carleigh Berry also drove in runs in the inning.
After sending the Huskers (26-20, 5-6) down in quick fashion in the first Zabriskie gave up a solo shot to Gabby Banda in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1. The homer was Banda's third homer of the season.
Iowa State added two more runs in a wild fourth inning as Nebraska didn't help relief pitcher Ashley Hagemann, misplaying two pop flies that resulted in Cyclone hits.
Berry led off the inning with a single to left field before Hagemann retired the next two batters. Then things got interesting as Nebraska misplayed fly balls by Erica Miller and Wray. Wray's double scored a run and ISU tacked on the second as Miller scored on a wild pitch.
Nebraska again cut into the lead in their half of the inning, getting a two-run homer from Brooke Thomason to trim the deficit to 6-3.
The Huskers loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning but relief pitcher Lauren Kennewell was able to get out of the jam, forcing Ashley Guile to pop out to a diving Bradberry behind second base for the third out.
Kennewell held Nebraska scoreless over the final three innings to pick up her first save and secure Zabriskie's 20th win of the season. Zabriskie (20-13) becomes the first Cyclone since Lori Young in 1985 to record 20 wins in a single season.
Mackin (12-11) took the loss for the Huskers, lasting just two-thirds of an inning and giving up four runs. Hagemann gave up two runs on four hits in relief.
Wray finished the game with two hits in three at bats. The senior tied a season-high with three runs batted in.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday when it travels to Baylor for a Big 12 road series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
