AMES, Iowa - Kaeli Flaska's 89th-minute goal was Iowa State's high point Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. The Cyclones lost to Kansas 6-1 to drop to 8-9-1 on the season and 1-6 in Big 12 play. The win improved Kansas to 11-7 on the year, and 3-4 in conference competition.
Down 6-0 in the 89th minute, the Cyclones continued to press up field and try to get on the board. Off of a throw in, Alyssa Elver found Kaeli Flaska at the top of the 18-yard box. After beating a couple of defenders, Flaska let loose a high and hard shot that eluded the grasp of KU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud.
The Cyclones took more shots than Kansas at 19-to-17, putting eight shots on goal. Emily Goldstein put three shots on target to lead the Cyclone attackers.
Kansas struck first in the 11th minute as a free kick from 20-yards out by Amy Gow was struck passed the outstretched left hand of Cyclone keeper Maddie Jobe.
The Jayhawks doubled their lead in the 37th minute as Kortney Clifton hooked onto a Jamie Fletcher pass and chipped it over the outstretched hands of Jobe.
Iowa State put two chances on goal in the first 45 minutes as a first-minute header by Emily Goldstein and a seventh minute shot from Brittany Morgan were both smothered by Kansas goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud.
Kansas took control immediately in the second half as Ingrid Vidal struck 30 seconds into the period on a through ball from Whitney Berry to expand the KU advantage to 3-0. Three became four six minutes later when Berry volleyed in the fourth goal from a Shannon Renner pass. Liana Salazar added a fifth in the 64th minute. A crossfield pass from Haley Yearout left Caroline Van Slambrouck a chance at goal, which she converted to make the score line 6-0 in the 76th minute.
The Cyclones wrap up the regular season Friday at Missouri. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CDT.
