AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team saw centerfielder Heidi Kidwell put up career-best efforts Saturday in the Cyclone Indoor Invitational at the Bergstrom Training Facility, helping the Cyclones to a 9-1 win over Western Illinois and a 16-2 victory over South Dakota State. Iowa State is now 4-0 on the season.
Against South Dakota State, Kidwell had a career-best four hits in the game on 4-of-4 hitting. Kidwell had two doubles and a triple to go with a single. Her three runs and two doubles were also career-highs for the Solon native.
On the day, Kidwell went 7-of-8 at the plate with three RBIs, two doubles, a triple and three stolen bases. Through the first four games of the 2011 season, Kidwell has already stolen two bases. Her two steals against Western Illinois in the first game tied her career-high for a game.
Like their previous game Friday night against the Leathernecks, the Cyclones wasted little time putting runs on the board, posting three runs in the first. For the third consecutive game, Kidwell led off the game with a single and immediately stole second base. Kidwell was eventually brought in by a Tori Torrescano double. Dalyn Varela then drove in Torrescano on a single followed by Sara Davison bringing home Varela on a single of her own.
Iowa State burst out in the second frame, with the entire lineup getting an at bat and six runs going onto the board. The inning was highlighted by a three-run shot by Varela that made the score 8-0 in favor of Iowa State. The long bomb was the first of Varela's career.
In her first career start, Breeanna Holliday earned the victory, pitching all five innings. The freshman allowed six hits and struck out one batter. Her lone earn run was on a home run by WIU pitcher Ashley Campbell.
In game two, Iowa State posted two first inning runs to get its momentum going. Kidwell repeated her start to game one by getting a single to lead-off the inning and stealing second. Kidwell came around to score after a throwing error by SDSU's Ashley Durazo trying to get a force out at second. The second run came in on a bases loaded walk drawn by Sara Rice.
Kidwell got back to work in the second, hitting a standup triple to deep center that drove home Carleigh Berry all the way from first. Bianca Lopez plated Kidwell with an RBI single. The first four batters for the Cyclones in the second inning all came around to score in the frame, which finished with Iowa State ahead, 7-0.
Lauren Kennewell made her first start of the season and picked up the win, pitching all five innings, allowing nine hits for two earned runs and striking out two SDSU batters.
The Cyclones conclude the Cyclone Indoor Invitational tomorrow with a doubleheader against Valparaiso. The first game will start at 11 a.m. CST.
