COLUMBIA, Mo. - Iowa State (21-28, 3-15 Big 12) lost two games to No. 6 Missouri (46-7, 15-3 Big 12) on Saturday by the scores of 8-2 and 8-1 as Missouri clinched at least a share of the Big 12 championship with the sweep.
The highlight of the day for Iowa State was freshman Sara Davison's second career home run, off Mizzou ace Chelsea Thomas (27-5) in game one. Davison is only the seventh batter this year to homer off Thomas.
At the plate in game one with two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the third inning, Mizzou's Ashley Fleming smashed Rachel Zabriskie's (14-18) first pitch over the right field wall to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Davison got one back for the Cyclones with her blast into the left field bleachers to lead off the fourth, making the score 3-1 in favor of the home team.
Following Davison's homer, Dalyn Varela hit a single out to right-center and Erica Miller reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt that moved Varela to second with no outs in the inning. The second error of the day by MU shortstop Jenna Marston on a grounder by Tori Torrescano loaded the bases for Iowa State but Thomas fanned the next three Cyclones to get out of the jam.
Princess Krebs added two more for the Tigers with an RBI double in the fifth before crossing home herself on a single to left by Kathryn Poet as MU took the 6-1 lead. Nicole Hudson brought Vock home in the sixth on a grounder to second and a wild pitch by Iowa State reliever Lauren Kennewell plated Marston for MU's final run of the game.
The Cyclones threatened the 8-1 Missouri lead in the seventh when Erin Johnson reached on a wild pitch by Hudson, working in relief of Thomas, before Habben walked and Folks reached on a fielder's choice that moved Johnson to third with one out. Johnson came home when Kidwell reached on her own fielder's choice. A walk by Davison was followed by a fly out by Varela to end the game.
Kidwell led off game two with a single to center field, advancing to second on an error by center fielder Rhea Taylor and was bunted to third by Davison. Mizzou starter Kristin Nottelmann (15-1) hit Varela to put runners at the corners with one out and got a pop-up from Miller before Varela stole the first base of her career and Torrescano struck out to end the first inning threat.
Vock lit up for Missouri in game two, hitting two home runs off Breeanna Holliday (3-5) and drove in three runs. Missouri scored six runs in the third inning after Holliday threw two scoreless innings to start the game. Fleming hit her second three-run dinger of the day in the six-run frame and Vock smashed her first dinger of the game.
Vock's second home run of the day came with one out in the fourth, again to left field, for the 7-0 lead.
Iowa State got on the board in the top of the fifth when Cole came around on an error by MU's Catherine Lee.
Zabriskie entered to finish the game and the season for the Cyclones, allowing two hits, one walk and fanning one in relief.
In her final games as a Cyclone, Zabriskie threw six innings, allowing 11 hits, six runs and three walks. With four strikeouts on the day, Zabriskie finishes her career with an Iowa State record 815 strikeouts, ranked 10th in Big 12 history.
