CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Iowa State junior Tori Torrescano hit two two-run home runs and threw a complete game to lead the Cyclones (4-9, 0-0 Big 12) past San Diego State (8-7, 0-0 Mountain West) at the Cathedral City Classic on Saturday. The win is the biggest for Iowa State this season as the Aztecs are currently receiving votes in both polls.
For the second time in her career, Torrescano posted a multi-home run game, the first time coming last season against Northern Iowa. The two home runs gives Torrescano 19 career home runs, tied for fourth-most in Iowa State history. This year, Torrescano has a team-high five homers, 29 total bases and 10 RBIs. She is also second on the team in walks with six.
Starring in the circle as well, Torrescano (4-4) pitched her second complete game on the season, holding San Diego State to four runs, three earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out one. The only stumble for Torrescano came in the final frame when the Aztecs scored three in a late comeback attempt.
In the first inning, freshman Lexi Slater started things off with a bang, smashing her first career home run to lead off the game. Three batters later, Torrescano hit the first of her home runs of the contest, scoring along with Sara Davison to give Iowa State an early 3-0 lead. Aztec starter Kristin May (2-3) lasted only 0.1 inning, giving up three hits, three runs, walking one and striking out none.
With the Cyclones leading 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Torrescano stepped to the plate with no outs and infielder Dalyn Varela on first base after a leadoff single and smashed her second four-bagger of the game, giving Iowa State a 6-1 lead and putting the game out of reach for SDSU.
Next weekend, Iowa State heads south to El Paso, Texas for the UTEP Invitational, March 2-4, where the Cyclones will face Valparaiso, Texas-San Antonio, UTEP and Brown. The weekend kicks off March 2 against Valparaiso, who the Cyclones lost to in the season opener in Ames. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST.
