LAWRENCE, Kansas -The Iowa State soccer team (6-10-0, 0-6-0) fell 2-1 to the No. 15 Kansas Jayhawks (15-3-0, 5-2-0) Friday night at the Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence.
Turning Point of the Game
In the sixth minute an Iowa State defender got tangled with a Kansas forward in the box awarding the Jayhawks with a penalty kick. Kansas' Liana Salazar was able to sneak the shot past Andrea Swanson and into the back of the net. Kansas went up 2-0 when Salazar was able to weave through the Cyclone defense and fire a shot into the Cyclones goal. Koree Willer gave the Cyclones life in the 87th minute putting Iowa State on the board. The Cyclones were unable to score the equalizer in the final minutes of the game.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Andrea Swanson and the entire Cyclone defense. Kansas came out firing and the Cyclones were able to stop nearly every attempt thrown at them. It didn't matter whether it was Swanson or another defender, the Cyclones were able to get bodies in front of everything. The difference maker came from a goal scored off of a penalty kick. Swanson set a career-high with 13 saves in the game.
Coach Said it
“At the start of the game they were all over us and we struggled to match their intensity and energy,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “Being senior night we knew that it would be a pretty special night for them and they were going to come out hard. Once we settled in we started getting some composure on the ball. Macy Vrabel and Maribell Morales came in and did a great job. At the end of the half we had some great opportunities and put them under some pressure. We had a dip in energy in the second half, but were able to regroup. It's unfortunate that they were able to get that second goal, but we'll regroup and be ready for Texas Tech.”
Game Notes
*Koree Willer's 9th goal this season is tied for fifth most in the Cyclone record book.
*Senior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded a career high 13 saves. She now has 213 career saves.
*Iowa State is now 5-12-1 all-time against Kansas.
