AMES, Iowa-The Iowa State soccer team (6-7, 0-3) fell 1-0 to Texas (7-4-2, 2-1) on a chilly Friday night in Ames, Iowa, at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State returns home on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT to face the Oklahoma Sooners.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 69th minute a corner kick from Texas's Chantale Campbell found the back of the net off the head of Brooke Gilbert. The goal broke the 0-0 tie that had lasted the first 68 minutes of the game. Iowa State fought for the equalizer but was unable to put one past Longhorn goalkeeper Abby Smith.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Andrea Swanson. The senior goalkeeper was outstanding throughout the contest, making numerous saves including one in the first half that required every bit of her wingspan to deflect the ball over the goal. Texas fired 24 shots at Swanson, but she didn't back down. The one goal scored against Swanson was a header from a corner kick that hung up in the wind and snuck by the senior.
Coach Said It
“We talked about bringing effort all week,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “Our athletes went out there and left it all on the field tonight. Execution at certain moments in the game needed to be better. We had opportunities to finish in both halves. All in all, hats off to my team for coming back after the loss to Baylor. To come back with that type of effort, I am very proud of them.”
Game Notes
*Senior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded seven saves. She now has 210 career saves.
*Iowa State was outshot by the Longhorns 24-6.
*Iowa State is now 2-19-1 all-time against Texas.
