AMES, Iowa- A goal scored off a free kick in the 48th minute proved to the be decisive score as Iowa State (6-8, 0-4) fell to the Oklahoma Sooners (8-3-2, 2-0) on Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State returns to action on Oct. 17 when West Virginia visits the Cyclones.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 48th minute, Oklahoma's Laura Rayfield fired a free kick from 15 yards out from the front left side of the box that snuck by everyone and found the back of the net. The goal by Rayfield flipped momentum into the hands of the Sooners and Oklahoma never gave it back, holding off every attempt Iowa State could offer in the remaining minutes.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Haley Albert. The senior midfielder was everywhere today for the Cyclones. Whether it was solid defense or setting up her teammates, Albert got it done. The entire Cyclone midfield was solid as a whole, but the team just couldn't find the back of the net.
Coach Said It
“That was a tough game,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “I thought we played great in the first half. It was back and forth. Both team were playing really good soccer. They always talk about the big five moments with the last five minutes in the first half and first five minutes of the second half. We came out a little bit asleep in the second half and they were able to sneak that free kick in. We have to play for 90 minutes and we have to do better with our pieces with matching up and ensuring that we're staying engaged in what's going on on the field.”
Game Notes
*Senior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded three saves. She now has 213 career saves.
*Iowa State is now 9-8-2 all-time against Oklahoma.
