AMES, Iowa-The Iowa State soccer team (2-2-0) defeated the Saint Louis Billikens (2-2-0) 2-1 Sunday in the first home game of the year at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Iowa State continue its home stand Friday for the Iowa Corn CyHawk series game against Iowa at 7:30 p.m.
Turning Point of the Game
In the 26th minute, sophomore Koree Willer found herself with an open window towards the Saint Louis goal from 20 yards out. Willer wasted no time trying to advance the ball towards the goal, firing a rocket into the top right corner of the Billiken net. Adalie Schmidt put the Cyclones on top 2-0 in the 71st minute. The score proved to be too much for a Billikens come back.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Tie between Koree Willer and Adalie Schmidt. The two sophomores have formed quite a connection, hooking up for goals in each of the last two games. This time, Koree Willer was set up by Schmidt in the 26th minute to put the Cyclones up 1-0. Willer returned the favor to her teammate dishing a pass ahead of the defense finding a wide-open Schmidt who connected on the Cyclones' second goal in the 71st minute. The duo is tied for first on the team in goals scored on the season with three goals each.
Coach Said it
“I thought we came out kind of flat,” head coach tony Minatta said. “We possessed the ball well and were doing some nice things, but we just didn't have that next level that we needed to score. We controlled the game. Defensively, we were very strong. This is a team that scored eight goals in their previous three games and we held them to zero at the half and scoreless for almost 80 minutes of the game. I really like what Adalie and Koree did to score those two goals.”
Game Notes
*Both Willer and Schmidt have three goals on the season, which is tied for most on the team.
*Goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded 2 saves. She now has 173 saves in her career.
*Iowa State is 1-0 at home this season.
