AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State lost on a gloomy Wednesday afternoon to Drake at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Drake won 6-3, making ISU's record now 19-15, and the Bulldogs 21-12.
The Bulldogs started out strong posting five runs within the first three innings and a home run by Laura Brewer at the top of the sixth. The Cyclones tried to strike back by creating a few runs in the third-through-fifth innings, but ultimately could not keep up with Drake.
A Slow Start For ISU
It took the Cyclones three innings before getting on the scoreboard, with the help of Cathlin Bingham's three-base error via a dropped fly ball that got Brittany Gomez across home plate. After Bingham's play the Cyclones starting picking up steam.
In the fourth inning, Lexi Slater hit several foul balls but patiently waited for the right pitch. Finally Slater catches enough of the ball to make a solid hit to make it to right. A few batters later, Nychole Antillon helped Slater make it home and keeps the Cyclones in the game at the bottom of the fourth inning, making the score 5-2.
Cyclones Show Their Persistence
ISU kept Drake off the board in the third and fourth innings trying to make their comeback. By the bottom of the fifth basses were loaded and Aly Cappaert hit one to left field getting her team another run inching closer to tying up the game.
The Cyclones looked like they could catch up to Drake and pull out a home win. However, they started to lose their momentum after Bulldogs first baseman, Laura Brewer, launched her home run in the sixth inning. ISU couldn't put another run on the board and Drake pulled away with the 6-3 victory.
Stacy Roggentien's Career High
Iowa State worked defensively to keep Drake off the board in the seventh inning. Stacy Roggentine stuck out the side, making that her 10th strikeout of the game. In defeat, Roggentien posted her career high in strikeouts, doubling her previous best of five.
