AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team (15-15, 0-1 Big 12) fell to No. 19 Baylor (29-7, 3-0 Big 12) in its conference opener by a score of 16-4 on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The loss came despite senior Sammie Hildreth staying hot at the plate, hitting a solo home in the second inning, her third in as many games.
Game One: Baylor 16, Iowa State 4
The Lady Bears showed off their offensive fire power right out of the gates, as Jessie Scroggins opened the game with a double, followed by a two-run homer for teammate Ari Hawkins. Another BU batter would walk before Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders was able to get three consecutive outs to get out of the inning.
Baylor was right back at it in the top of the second inning, putting four more on the board in the stanza. Scroggins got an RBI of her own early on, followed by Robin Landrith scoring on a wild pitch. Shelby Friudenberg then stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run to extend the BU lead to 6-0.
Hildreth got Iowa State on the board in the bottom half of the second, however. After two quick outs to open the frame, the senior catcher stepped to the plate and launched a home run to left center on a 1-0 count. It was Hildreth's fourth of the season and third in the past three games.
Baylor answered right back in the ensuing inning, extending its lead to 8-1 on an RBI single from Kyla Walker, followed by a Scroggins home run, her first of two on the day.
Iowa State was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning, as they first loaded the bases on a base hit from Sally Woolpert and a double from Brittany Gomez, followed by a Cathlin Bingham walk. Katie Dukes, pinch running for Woolpert, was able to come in to score on an error by the BU catcher.
Bingham was later able to score on a similar play, this time capitalizing on a throwing miscue by the BU third baseman. With the bases still loaded, Hildreth was hit by a pitch to bring the final run around, cutting Baylor's lead to 8-4.
However, the Lady Bears would tack six runs on in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth and final inning, as the Cyclones fell 16-4.
