AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team (15-16, 0-2 Big 12) lost in game two of its series with No. 19 Baylor (30-7, 4-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex by a score of 17-6. The Cyclones put five runs on the board in the first inning, including a three-run home run from Nychole Antillon, but were unable to maintain that pace.
Game One: Baylor 17, Iowa State 6
Baylor once again was able to put its explosive offense on display from the start, as the Lady Bears took a 4-0 lead before the first out of the game had been recorded. Kyla Walker had an RBI double to start the scoring, followed by singles from Linsey Hays and Sarah Smith to bring BU runs around. The visitors score five runs in total in the top of the first.
The Cyclones answered right back in the home half of the first inning, started by singles from Brittany Gomez and Cathlin Bingham to lead off. With runners on the corners, a passed ball brought Gomez in to score and advanced Bingham to second with no outs.
Kelsey McFarland and Sammie Hildreth then got in on the action with back-to-back singles, with Hildreth's hit bringing Bingham around to score, to cut the Baylor lead to 5-2. With one out and two Cyclone runners on, sophomore Nychole Antillon crushed the first pitch she saw to center field for a three-run homer, tying the game at 5-5. It was Antillon's third home run of the season and gave the Cyclones life after one inning of play.
The relentless Baylor attack allowed the Lady Bears to notch two more runs in the second before freshman starter Emma Hylen, was able to silence the BU bats for a time. The Cyclones held Baylor scoreless in the third and fourth inning, as Iowa State remained in a 7-5 hole heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Singles from Bingham and Aly Cappaert with two outs put the Cyclones in scoring position once more with KcFarland at the plate. The sophomore drove a single up the middle for an RBI base hit to score Bingham from third, cutting the deficit to 7-6.
However, that was as close as Iowa State was able to get, as Baylor notched six runs in the fifth inning and four in the seventh to put the game away.
